On Saturday, November 22, 2025, Long Island Coalition for the Homeless hosted its second annual Stuff the Pantry event, building on the remarkable success of last year. This food drive has become a vital part of the community’s effort to support families in need, especially as the demand for pantry items has nearly tripled over the past year. The event brought together volunteers, local youth groups, and generous donors to help fill the pantry shelves and make a difference during the Thanksgiving season.

Growing Need and Community Response

Last year, the Coalition launched the Stuff the Pantry event to address the urgent need for food supplies, as the pantry shelves were empty. Since then, the Coalition has partnered with Long Island Cares and benefited from strong community support, which helped keep the pantry stocked. Despite this progress, the number of families relying on the pantry has increased to about 150 per week, nearly tripling the demand for donations.

This growing need highlights the importance of community service and volunteer efforts. Stuff the Pantry serves as a powerful reminder that local support can make a tangible impact. By coming together, neighbors, youth groups, and volunteers help ensure that families have access to essential food items, especially during the holiday season.

Youth Involvement and Hands-On Learning

One of the most inspiring parts of this year’s event was the involvement of the Wantagh Hawks 11 youth Little League team and a local Girl Scouts Troop. These young volunteers helped sort donations, learning firsthand about the Coalition’s mission and the importance of community service. Their participation not only supported the food drive but also provided valuable lessons about giving back and the impact of collective effort.

The youth groups worked alongside adult volunteers, sorting canned goods, organizing boxes, and preparing items for distribution. This hands-on experience allowed them to see how their contributions help families in need and encouraged a spirit of generosity and responsibility.

Festive Activities and Community Spirit

Stuff the Pantry was more than just a food drive. The event included a fall-themed photo booth and craft activities, creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere for all attendees. These activities helped bring the community together, making the event enjoyable for families and volunteers alike.

The festive setting encouraged people to stay, connect, and celebrate the spirit of giving. It also provided an opportunity to raise awareness about food insecurity and the ongoing need for donations throughout the year.

How You Can Help Beyond the Event

While Stuff the Pantry is an annual highlight, the need for pantry donations continues year-round. The Coalition encourages community members to stay involved by:

  • Donating non-perishable food items regularly

  • Volunteering time to help sort and distribute pantry goods

  • Organizing smaller food drives in neighborhoods, schools, or workplaces

  • Spreading awareness about food insecurity and the Coalition’s work

Every contribution, big or small, helps support families facing food challenges. Volunteering offers a chance to connect with others and see the direct impact of your efforts.

Looking Ahead

The success of the second annual Stuff the Pantry event shows how much can be achieved when a community comes together. The Coalition’s pantry is fuller than ever, but the rising demand means ongoing support remains crucial. Events like this one not only provide immediate relief but also build a stronger, more caring community.

The Coalition invites everyone to join in, whether by donating food, volunteering, or simply sharing the message. Together, the community can continue to meet the growing need and ensure no family goes hungry.
