The Long Island Coalition for the Homeless marked a significant milestone with its 40th anniversary gala, bringing together over 200 attendees to celebrate four decades of dedication to ending homelessness on Long Island. Founded in 1985 as a grassroots advocacy group, LICH has grown through strong partnerships and community support to provide vital services and raise awareness about homelessness in the region. The gala was a powerful reminder of the progress made and the ongoing commitment needed to support vulnerable populations.
Honoring Four Decades of Service and Partnership
LICH began as a local effort to unite nonprofits and community partners around the shared goal of addressing homelessness. Over the years, the Coalition has expanded its reach and impact by fostering collaboration and advocating for enhanced services tailored to Long Island’s unique needs. The 40th anniversary gala was an opportunity to honor this legacy and recognize those who have played key roles in the organization’s success.
Several individuals received special recognition during the event:
Jon and Gretchen Hargis for their longstanding support and dedication to LICH’s mission.
Mike Dorso, representing the LICH Pantry, for his exceptional volunteerism and commitment to serving others.
Peter Barnett, a founding board member, whose vision and leadership helped shape the Coalition.
Greta Guarton for her inspiring leadership and continued dedication as Executive Director of the Coalition.
These honorees exemplify the spirit of community and service that has driven LICH’s work since its inception.
A Night of Celebration and Community Spirit
The gala was emceed by Ray Schwetz from Jovia, who guided the evening with warmth and enthusiasm. Attendees enjoyed a program that highlighted LICH’s achievements and shared stories of the people and communities the coalition serves. The event also featured a raffle supported by generous donations from local businesses and community members, adding an element of excitement while raising funds for ongoing programs.
The planning committee, led by Vart Soroyan, a dedicated new board member for 2025, worked tirelessly to ensure the event’s success. Their efforts reflected the collaborative spirit that defines the Coalition's approach to tackling homelessness.
The Importance of Local Support and Collaboration
LICH’s history shows that addressing homelessness requires more than just direct services; it demands strong partnerships and community involvement. The Coalition’s ability to bring together nonprofits, volunteers, sponsors, and advocates has been crucial in expanding resources and creating a network of support.
The gala’s sponsors played a vital role in making the event possible. Their contributions demonstrate how local businesses and organizations can make a meaningful difference by investing in solutions that benefit the entire community.
We are deeply grateful to our event sponsors and donors whose generosity helped make this evening possible. Their support allows us to continue our mission and expand our impact across Long Island.
